CNN Hero: Reflecting on Our Fundraiser for Anuradha Koirala and Maiti Nepal
COMMUNITY

There are moments in life that transcend the ordinary—moments where community, purpose, and a global icon align to create something truly impactful. For me, that moment was the fundraising event held in Sydney, organized by NRNA Australia in association with the Consulate General of Nepal, NSW.
It was a profound honor to serve as the Coordinator, Host, and Speaker for an evening dedicated to a woman who has become the conscience of our nation: Anuradha Koirala, the 2010 CNN Hero of the Year.
A Hero Among Us
Anuradha Koirala is more than just a name; she is a symbol of hope for thousands who were once voiceless. Since founding Maiti Nepal in 1993, she has stood as a fierce guardian against the "heinous crime" of human trafficking.
To stand on the same stage and introduce her to the Nepalese diaspora in Australia was a humbling experience. Her presence reminded everyone in the room that while we may be miles away from our homeland, our responsibility to protect the most vulnerable daughters of Nepal remains a shared duty.
The Mission: Beyond the Applause
The event was not just a celebration of her international accolades; it was a mission-driven gathering. As the coordinator, my goal—and the goal of the NRNA team—was to ensure that every word spoken and every dollar raised translated into real-world impact.
All proceeds from the night were dedicated to Maiti Nepal, supporting their three-tier mission:
Prevention: Patrolling the Indo-Nepal border to stop trafficking before it happens.
Rescue: Breaking the chains of those trapped in the forced prostitution trade.
Rehabilitation: Providing a safe haven, medical care, and legal support to help survivors reclaim their dignity.
A Community United in Sydney
Seeing the Sydney community come together under the banner of the Consulate General and NRNA was a testament to the spirit of the Nepali people. As I spoke to the audience that evening, I felt a deep sense of pride. We weren't just attendees at a gala; we were active participants in a movement to end the exploitation of women and children.
Anuradha Koirala often says, "Animals are treated better than these women." That harsh reality is what drives us. The funds raised during this event are a direct contribution to her relentless fight, ensuring that Maiti Nepal can continue to be a shield for the vulnerable.
Final Reflections
Looking back on the event, I am reminded that the "international arena" where Anuradha Koirala made us proud is not just about the awards she receives in Los Angeles or at the UN—it’s about the community of supporters she inspires in cities like Sydney.
To everyone who attended, donated, and supported: Thank you. We have shown that when we unite, we don't just celebrate our heritage; we protect its future.
